PIONA analysis developments
                  



PIONA analysis using packed gas chromatography is performed using turn-key instrumentation: a multi-dimensional group type separation of hydrocarbon type samples based on ASTM D-6839.ASTM D6839 Schematics 
The instrument separates the hydrocarbon sample, having a boiling range up to 280C, in their functionalities, iso- and normal alkanes, naphthenes, aromatics and 
iso- and normal alkenes, and carbon numbers C2 through to C11; the higher boiling fraction is reported as a group. Also some selected oxygenated components are fully separated and reported.

The separation is based on a series of selectivities, stationary phases, enabling the isolation of specific component based on their physical or chemical properties.


I have been involved in the development of various generations of this type of instruments with AC Analytical Controls, Varian and Bruker.

This type of analysis is also done on a single, long capillary column and is then called DHA (Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis).However the packed approach is far more selective. Which method is favorable depends on the sample comnposition as well as which data are to be determined.
